abstract 1469032 Solid state preparation of polyesters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Dee 1975 [13 Jan 1975] 1349/75 Heading C3R A process for preparing a polyester comprises reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in the solid state with an alkylene oxide, the reaction conditions being controlled so that throughout the reaction a major part of the reaction mass forms a solid phase, the esterification being catalyzed by phosphorus acid. The catalyst may be added to the aromatic dicarboxylic acid at the start of the reaction and is preferably used in an amount from 0À1 to 5% by weight based on the aromatic dicarboxylic acid. The reaction may be carried out under fluidized bed conditions with the dicarboxylic acid in particulate form and the alkylene oxide in the vapour state. The Examples describe reacting ethylene oxide with terephthalic acid.
