titleOfInvention Process for the monotration of ortho-xylene
abstract 1468484 Mononitration of ortho-xylene AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 14 May 1975 [11 June 1974 (2)] 20397/75 Heading C2C A process for mononitrating o-xylene comprises reacting stoichiometrically o-xylene with a mixture of nitrogen dioxide or nitrogen tetroxide and either (i) an oxygen containing gas, (ii) concentrated nitric acid maintained at a concentration of from 68 to 98% by weight, in the presence of a mercury salt dissolved in an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof at a temperature of from 20‹ to 80‹ C. for from 1 to 8 hours and recovering mononitroo-xylene from the reaction mixture. The mercury salt is preferably mercuric acetate, mercuric propionate or mercuric benzoate and the solvent is preferably present in an amount from 1À0 to 10 mols of the acid per mol of o-xylene employed as the reactant.
