titleOfInvention | Semipermeable membrane and process for the preparation thereof |
abstract | 1467827 Acrylonitrile copolymer ultrafilters DAICEL Ltd 27 March 1974 [27 March 1973] 13502/74 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Semipermeable membranes suitable for ultrafiltration are composed of a copolymer made from 90 to 60 mole per cent of acrylonitrile and the balance, i.e. 10 to 40 mole per cent, of a non-ionic, water-soluble co-monomer whose homopolymers are also water soluble. The copolymer is dissolved in a particular solvent and cast into a membrane, at least some of the solvent is evaporated and the membrane is then immersed in ice-water. The solvent must be such that it is miscible with water in all proportions and has hydrogen bend and dipole parameters giving a point within the area enclosed by broken lines in the graph of Fig. 1 where these parameters are plotted against each other. Alternatively two such solvents or one such admixed with an organic, wholly water miscible solvent may be used provided that the weighted average of these parameters falls within this enclosed area. Co-monomers exemplified are acrylamide, N- vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidone, acryloylmorphine, hydroxyethylmethacrylate and N-vinyl-2-oxazolidene. Exemplified solvents are dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide, hexamethylene phosphoamide, formamide and dipropylene glycol. The membranes produced have a permeation velocity for distilled water under 3 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> pressure of 1À2 to 100 m.<SP>3</SP>/m.<SP>2</SP>/day. |
