titleOfInvention Cultivating of methane-utilising micro-organisms
abstract 1467022 Microbial protein amino acid profile SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 20 Dec 1974 [7 Jan 1974] 678/74 Heading C3H [Also in Division C6] A process for the production of micro-organisms particularly suitable as a proteinaceous feed supplement for animals, as compared to casein or herring meal, involves growing a methane-utilizing micro-organism which is a strain of Methylomonas under aerobic conditions in a liquid growth medium comprising assimilable sources of nitrogen and essential mineral salts, in the presence of methane gas and in the presence of (a) one or more methanol-utilizing micro-organisms which is/are capable of metabolizing methanol produced by the growing methane-utilizing micro-organism, and (b) one or more non-methylotrophic microorganisms which is/are capable of metabolizing organic substances produced by the methane- and/or methanol-utilizing micro-organisms, and recovering the micro-organisms produced from the liquid growth medium. There is preferably employed a mixed culture designated T3 (NCIB No. 11085) of which an amino acid profile is disclosed, comprised of a methaneutilizing Methylomonas sp. (NCIB No. 11084), a methanol-utilizing Pseudomonas sp. (NCIB No. 11112) and four non-methylotrophic microorganisms viz. Pseudomonas sp. (NCIB No. 11062, 11063 and 11065) and Mycobacterium sp. (NCIB No. 11061). However, the compounds of culture T3 may be replaced by other microorganisms (specified) having similar functions.
