titleOfInvention Acetylenic hydrocarbons
abstract 1467013 Separating acetylenic hydrocarbons TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 3 Sept 1974 [19 Sept 1973] 38492/74 Heading C5E Diacetylene and vinylacetylene are separated from a hydrocarbon pyrolysis gas containing 1-10 mol. per cent of such compounds by selective adsorption on activated carbon, the surface of which has been saturated, before contact with the pyrolysis gas, with an inert non- explosive compound having carbon adsorption characteristics similar to those of diacetylene and vinylacetylene, the adsorbed C 4 acetylenic compounds being desorbed by passing a stream of inert gas through the bed of activated carbon to form a gas stream containing 30-50 mole per cent C 4 acetylenic compounds in the inert gas. The inert non-explosive compound may be n-butane, isopentane, 2,2-dimethylpropane or ethyl chloride. Preferably the carbon is pretreated with 1-5% of n-butane in N 2 and is cooled to 25‹-60‹ C. before contact with the pyrolysis gas, or is treated with liquid n-butane which is allowed to evaporate thereby cooling the carbon. The pyrolysis gas may mixed with 30-70 wt. per cent of the inert compound before contact with the pre-treated carbon. The process may be adapted to separate C 3 and C 4 acetylenic compounds by passing the pyrolysis gas through two beds of activated carbon in series only the first of which has been pre-treated with the inert compound, the C 4 acetylenic compound being adsorbed on the first bed and the C 3 hydrocarbons (methylacetylene and alkylene) passing through the first bed but being adsorbed on the second bed. The inert gas used for desorbing the adsorbed acetylenic compounds may be steam or N 2 saturated with methylene chloride.
