abstract 1465055 Rehydratable pet foods MARS Ltd 26 March 1974 [11 April 1973] 17401/73 Heading A2B A pet food which when rehydrated forms a paste is made by forming a mixture of comminuted heat treated meaty material (the term includes fish or poultry meat) with a pregelatinised starch binder sufficient to form 10-40% of the product forming into pieces, and drying the pieces to below 15% moisture content. The meaty material may include bone. The heat treatment may be by autoclaving e.g. for 45 mins at 21 p.s.i.g. The mixture may be extruded before drying to give a texture suitable for rehydration. The binder may be potato granules or flour or rusk granules. The preferred composition of the mix is 70-80% meaty material, 10-20% binder, and 10% added fat e.g. lard or suet fat. Other additives may be vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, colourings, citric or phosphoric acid, citrates, gluten strips, soya granules, salt, tomato puree, and caramel solution.
