March 1973 14 Jan 1974] 14018/74 Heading C2C Novel compounds I in which one of each pair R 1 and R 2 or R 3 and R 4 represents H and the other Cl, Br, Me,. MeS, Me 2 NSO 2 or CF 2 , n is 2 or 3, m is 0 or 1, X is O, S, optionally C 1-7 alkylated-imino, or CH 2 , R 5 and R 6 are hydrogen or together with the C- atoms to which they are attached form a phenyl ring and the dotted line represents an optional bond are prepared by (1) reacting a compound II in which Y is a leaving atom or group with a compound III to form a 10,11-dihydro derivative (2) reacting a compound VII with a compound III and if desired hydrogenating the compound formed (3) reacting a compound V with a compound VI to form a 10,11-dihydro compound. Compounds VII (R 1 or R 2 =Me, MeO, Cl, CF 3 and R 3 or R 4 = F, Cl, MeO) are prepared by reacting an R 1 or R 2 substituted 2-iodobenzoic acid with an R 3 or R 4 substituted thiophenol in the presence of copper converting the carboxyl group to carboxylmethyl by the standard homologation procedure and cyclizing the acid under acidic conditions. Compounds VII are reduced to the alcohol which is chlorinated to form compounds V (Y = Cl). Compounds I are CNS depressants and have neuroleptic properties and form with a carrier a pharmaceutical composition which may be administered orally or parenterally.
