titleOfInvention Electro-optic display systems
abstract 1464876 Control of displays; matrix displays DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 23 May 1974 [23 May 1973] 24556/73 Headings G4H and G5C An optoelectronic addressing arrangement for display elements 3 comprises photosensitive elements 10 located between a voltage source 8 and address lines Y1-Yn and controlled by optical signal generators 7, elements 10 forming part of a single photosensitive patch 5 formed with the display 1 as an integrated structure on a common substrate 21. As shown, each column of a matrix display is controlled by the contents of a shift register 15 whose parallel outputs selectively cause generators 7 to irradiate elements 10. The rows may be similarly controlled. Generators 7 may be a light source irradiating liquid crystals, or light emitting diodes (LED's) or semi-conductor lasers, or electroluminescent phosphor elements. Elements 10 may be cadmium sulphide or selenide photoconductors or photovoltaic elements. The display elements may be LED's, liquid crystals, or electroluminescent phosphor, plasma discharge, electrochromic or electrophoretic elements. The voltage source may provide steady, pulsed or alternating signals as required. Elements 7 and 10 may be connected by fibre optic light guides. To eliminate voltage build up across unselected elements 3 they may all be periodically discharged, or else conduction through elements 10 may be made non-ohmic.
