abstract 1463183 Synthetic detergent bars UNILEVER Ltd 20 Feb 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 7656/74 Heading C5D [Also in Division C2] Non-tacky synthetic detergent toilet bars can be made from alkali or alkali metal or ammonium salts of alkane sulphonic acids prepared by (i) preparing a reaction mixture comprising (a) a cosolvent of water and an aliphatic organic hydroxyl containing compound having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, with the weight ratio of organic compound to water being from 4 : 1 to 1 : 9, and (b) an alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium bisulphite, (ii) adding an acyclic alpha-mono-olefin as herein defined containing from 5 to 30 carbon atoms to the reaction mixture under reflux over a period of time in the presence of a free radical initiator at a pH between 4 and 9, (iii) continuing reflux of the reactants until the reaction is complete.
