titleOfInvention Fluid flow control valve
abstract 1462391 Valves S Z TURNEY 7 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 00565/74 Heading F2V [Also in Division A5] A valve for selectively connecting components has a vent passage so formed in the valve member or housing that one component is vented while a further two are interconnected. In use four ports of the valve are connected respectively to a syringe, a saline source, a pressure measuring transducer and a patient's blood system. A handle integral with a rotary cylindrical valve member moves relative indicator markings on the housing so that in position 1 the patient's blood pressure can be measured, in position 2 a sample of blood can be taken or the system flushed, in position 3 the syringe can be filled with saline solution prior to flushing, in position 4 a fast flush can take place or fluid can be fed into the patient and in position 5 the patient's blood pressure can again be measured. The transducer is vented by an axial passage in the valve member in position 2 so that high pressure will not damage the transducer. In a modification three valve members are provided in a single body so that the pressure in both the arteries and veins can be measured, the two valve members for connecting the patient to the transducers being vented. In a further modification the vent passage is provided in the housing and the transducer is vented in positions 2 and 3. The valve member may slide instead of rotating or may slide and rotate. It may also be formed of two relatively rotatable plugs to adapt the valve for different functions.
