titleOfInvention Continuous process for the production of phenolic urea and mela mine resins and apparatus therefor
abstract 1460029 Continuous manufacture of urea, melamine or phenolic resins PERSTORP AB 5 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972 8 Nov 1973] 56298/73 Heading C3R [Also in Division B1] A process for the production of phenolic resin, urea resin or melamine resin is carried out in an apparatus comprising compartments defined by a plurality of baffles 14, 15, 21 23, 24 &c. arranged to form an "under and over" sinuous path for liquid reaction mixture, central alternate baffles, e.g. 23 and 24 possibly extending to the top of the reactor, reaction components being introduced into one end, e.g. compartment 13. Air can be introduced through valves 29 and 30 and gas drawn off by vacuum through conduit 8. Initial and final compartments may have heating/cooling jackets or coils, and at least one compartment where reaction components are charged may have one or more stirrers. The baffles may have toothed edges. A lignin or colophony solution may be added as a modifying agent. In specific examples, phenol and formalin are reacted in the presence of aqueous NaOH using a phenol/ formaldehyde mol. ratio of 1 : 1À76 (Ex. 1); 1 ; 1À44 (Ex. 2); 1: 1À57 (Ex. 3) and 1 : 1À45 (Ex. 8); urea formaldehyde resin with a urea/ formaldehyde mol. ratio of 1 : 1À41 (Ex. 4 and Ex. 6) is formed from a urea-formaldehyde concentrate and urea using formic acid for pH adjustment and adding aqueous NaOH/urea solution towards the end of the flow path; and melamine formaldehyde resin is prepared from melamine and formalin in mol. ratio of 1 : 1À85 (Ex. 5) and 1 : 1À83 (Ex. 7).
