titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of brominated alcohols
abstract 1459353 Brominated alcohols and borates and phosphates thereof WARWICK CHEMICAL Ltd 21 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 45454/74 Headings C2C C2B and C2P Brominated alcohols, in which each of two adjacent C atoms has a Br atom attached to it, are prepared by reacting an unsaturated C 3-7 alcohol with Br 2 in the presence of aqueous NaBr or KBr at 0-55‹C. The alcohol is preferably an allylic alcohol, the molar ratio of Br 2 : alcohol 1 : 1 to 1 : 1À5, the molar ratio of alcohol to NaBr or KBr from 0À1 : 1 to 3 : 1 and the concentration of aqueous NaBr or KBr is 5-55% by weight. In the example 2,3-dibromopropanol is prepared from allyl alcohol in the presence of NaBr. Tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) borate is prepared by reaction of 2,3-dibromopropanol and B 2 O 3 . Tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate is obtained by reacting 2,3-dibromopropanol with POCl 3 . Alternatively P 2 O 5 is added to a mixture of 2,3-dibromopropanol and hypophosphorous acid.
