N - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 4 - aminophthalimide is prepared by hydrogenation over Raney nickel from the corresponding nitrophthalimide (Example 2). N - ethyl - 4 - nitrophthalimide is prepared from 4 - nitrophthalimide and iodoethane (Example 3). The corresponding aminophthalimide is prepared by hydrogenation (Example 4). N - ethyl - 3 - nitrophthalimide and the corresponding aminophthalimide are prepared similarly (Examples 5 and 6).
