1459090 Aqueous coating compositions with complexed carboxyl groups UNION CAMP CORP 3 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 30660/76 Divided out of 1459089 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C2] An aqueous coating composition comprises a partially neutralized acidic resin and a metal amine complexer, the complexer comprising a metal having a co-ordination value in excess of its valency (e.g. Zn, Zr, Co or Ni) or a compound thereof, from 0À9 to 6À0 moles per mole of metal of a polyalkylene polyamine of formula where a is 2 or 3, n is 2-5 and R = H or methyl, and from 0 to 1 mole, per mole of metal, of a carboxylic acid. The complexer may also include a co-metal which is an alkali or alkaline earth metal. The metal compound may be, e.g. zinc oxide or zinc octoate. In examples, the resins used were an alkyd resin modified by tall oil fatty acids and rosin fumarate, a partial ester of a rosin-maleic adduct or a mixture of the latter with a styrene-maleic copolymer or an acrylic copolymer. Inks were made comprising the coating composition, a pigment (e.g. barium lithol, phthalo blue, benzidine yellow, Reichold's yellow, carbon black or TiO 2 ) and possibly isopropanol (co-solvent) or polyethylene glycol. |
