titleOfInvention Water-soluble polymers containing aryl nuclei
abstract 1458153 Polymers containing hydroquinone groups FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 20 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 55234/74 Heading C3P Polymers containing recurring units of one or both of the following general formulĀµ in which X is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, allyl or aryl, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl, R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, R<SP>3</SP> is a divalent group, and M is a cation (including hydrogen); are prepared by reacting an appropriate polymer containing dicarboxylic acid anhydride units with a hydroquinone compound containing an group, and optionally neutralizing residual carboxylic acid groups. The starting polymers may contain units of other monomers. In Examples, the starting polymer is poly(maleic anhydride), a copolymer of styrene with either citraconic anhydride or phenyl maleic anhydride, or a copolymer of maleic anhydride with methyl vinyl ether, vinyl acetate, ethylene, acrylamide, N,N - dimethylacrylamide or isobutylene; the hydroquinone reactant is 2-(3- aminopropyl)hydroquinone, 2-(2-aminopropyl)- hydroquinone, 2,5 - dihydroxy - 6 - bromobenzylamine, 2,5 - dihydroxy - 6 - t - butylbenzylamine, p-aminophenethyl hydroquinone, 2,5-dihydroxybenzylamine, or a mixture of the latter with 2 - (p - methylaminophenethyl) - 6- methyl hydroquinone; and the neutralizing agent (not used in all cases) is sodium or potassium carbonate, or sodium hydroxide or bicarbonate. In Examples 4 and 11, some of the anhydride units form salts with the hydroquinone reactant, the main reaction still being half-amidation.
