titleOfInvention Process for the production of alumina and alumina-silica fibers
abstract 1457801 Alumina and alumina/silica fibres SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 17 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973 5 June 1973] 7560/74 Heading C1A A process for producing alumina or aluminasilica fibre comprises spinning a solution of a polyaluminoxane, or of a mixture thereof with one or more silicon-containing compounds, in an organic solvent selected from ethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, benzene, toluene, xylene or a mixture thereof, the polyaluminoxane being soluble in the organic solvent and having identical or different structural units of the general formula wherein Y is an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an acyloxy group, or an optionally substituted phenoxy group, and when the structural units of the above formula are different Y may additionally be chosen from a halogen atom or a hydroxy group, and then calcining the resulting spun fibre, the silicon-containing compound when used being employed in an amount such that the calcined fibre contains not more than 60% by weight of silica. Group Y is preferably an alkyl, alkoxy or acyloxy group each having not more than four carbon atoms. In the examples, silicon compounds optionally mixed with polyaluminoxane are ethyl silicate, polydimethylsiloxane, γ - methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane. Calcining is preferably carried out at 700- 2000‹ C. in an atmosphere comprising free molecular oxygen with the fibre held under tension.
