titleOfInvention | Toner composition for use in electrophotography |
abstract | 1457070 Electrophotographic polyester toner composition KAO SOAP CO Ltd 24 Dec 1974 [29 Dec 1973] 55689/74 Headings C3R and C3B [Also in Division G2] A toner composition capable of being charged with a positive charge and suitable for use in electrophotographic development comprises 1 to 20 p.b.w. of a colorant and 80 to 99 p.b.w. of a binder resin which consists essentially of (a) a polyester resin of softening point 80 to 130 C. and N content 0À2 to 2À5 wt. per cent obtained by reacting (i) a dicarboxylic acid component of which 50 to 100 mol. per cent is fumaric, maleic or succinic acid or anhydride with (ii) a polyol component of which 10 to 100 mol. per cent is a glycol wherein R 1 is H, C 1-10 alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl or cyclohexyl; R 2 to R 5 are independently H or CH 3 and m and n are integers totalling 2 to 20 or (b) a blend of at least 55 wt. per cent of (a) with the balance being a polystyrene rosin maleate, petroleum resin or epoxy resin of softening point 80 to 150 C. A change control agent, plasticizer or filler may also be included. Numerous polyols (a) (ii) and other diacids and polyols which may be co-condensed in (a) and pigments and dyes which may be used as colorants are described. The toner composition may be prepared by the liquid spray or pulverization method to give particles of 5 to 20 microns. These may be blended with 10 to 100 p.b.w. of glass beads or iron powder to give a dry developer or dispersed in an insulating liquid, e.g. a liquid hydrocarbon of resistivity above 10<SP>9</SP> ohm. cm. and dielectric constant below 3, to give a liquid developer. In a process for developing electrostatic latent images a positive charge is imparted to its composition which is then applied to a copy substrate bearing a negative electrostatic latent image. In specific examples the latent image is on a sheet having a photosensitive ZnO layer which is developed by a magnetic brushing method. |
