abstract 1456596 Sulphonated condensation products YORKSHIRE CHEMICALS Ltd 10 Sept 1975 [11 Sept 1974] 39553/74 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions C2 and D1] Water soluble condensation products are obtained by reacting 1 mole of an aromatic hydrocarbon with 0À1 to 3À0 moles of benzyl alcohol and 1À0 to 2À0 moles of concentrated sulphuric acid at 20‹ to 160‹ C., and then reacting the product so formed with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde or a substance yielding formaldehyde, under acidic conditions. The products may be partially or completely neutralized with alkali.
