| abstract | 1455893 Lubricants; hydrocarbons CONTINENTAL OIL CO 25 Jan 1974 03661/74 Headings C5E and C5F Lubricants comprise (a) one or more linear oligomers of alpha-monoolefins of 8 to 12 carbon atoms, wherein at least 50% of the oligomer(s) contain(s) 24 to 60 carbon atoms, and (b) a synthetic hydrocarbon composition of which a major proportion is of Formula I wherein R and R 1 may be the same or different and each is a substantially straight-chain alkyl group of 6 to 18 carbon atoms, the two together having 20 to 28 carbon atoms, and A and A 1 , which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen, methyl or ethyl. When component (b) is a mixture, it may contain 5 to 30% of trialkyltetrahydronaphthalenes. The lubricants may also contain conventional additives, and may be used as crank-case lubricants, turbine lubricants, including aircraft turbine lubricants, hydraulic fluids, combination crackcase and transmission fluids, steering fluids and instrument lubricants. Hydrocarbon mixtures of the above kind may be made by the reaction between at least one C 8 to C 12 linear alpha-olefine, at least one compound of Formula III where A and A 1 are as above, and a mild Friedel- Crafts catalyst, such as aluminium chloride or bromide, with nitromethane as modifier, HF, BF etherate, ZnCl 2 or FeCl 3 , preferably with a promoter such as water, HCl, HBr, or an alkyl chloride or bromide. |
