abstract | 1455349 Reconstituted tobacco KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP 1 Aug 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 33916/74 Heading A2C Tobacco is reconstituted by (a) extracting natural tobacco to produce a tobacco extract and a fibrous residue (b) contacting the tobacco extract with an ion retardation resin to remove potassium nitrate from the extract, the resin including a cross-linked styrene-divinylbenzene polymer lattice having attached quaternary ammonium groups, interwoven with polymerised acrylic acid (c) forming the fibrous residue into a paper-like sheet and (d) recombining the denitrated extract with the fibrous tobacco sheet. The ion retardation resin has the structure where R 3 represents any three alkyl groups and the effect is to retard electrolytes such as KNO 3 while permitting passage of non-ionic constituents. Examples describe the extraction of Burley tobacco imdriss and the manufacture of cigarettes from the denitrated extract. Comparison is made of the quantities of nitric oxide and methyl nitrite in such cigarette smoke and that of conventional cigarettes. |
