titleOfInvention Method of controlling the growth of bacteria fungi and algae
abstract 1453569 Biocidal application of oxazolidines I M CHEMICAL GROUP INC 16 April 1975 [13 May 1974] 15697/75 Heading A5E [Also in Divisions C2, C5 and E1] A method of combating the growth of microorganisms and viruses comprises, applying to their habitat growth inhibiting amounts of an oxazolidine corresponding to the formula or a bicyclic oxazolidine corresponding to the formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> are each independently a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or the group where R<SP>6</SP> is a hydrogen atom, a methyl- or ethyl group and R<SP>7</SP> is a methyl, hydroxymethyl or ethyl group, R 3 is H, an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a hydroxyphenyl group; R<SP>4</SP> is an acyloxymethyl group of the formula where R<SP>5</SP> is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms and R<SP>8</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms. Typical compounds used are 4, 4-dimethyl-1, 3-oxazolidine; 1, 3-oxazolidine; and N-(2- meithyl-2-nitropropyl)-4, 4-dimethyl-1, 3-oxazolidine. Applications specified are in starch adhesives and solutions, in drilling muds .for the petroleum industry and in cutting oils
