abstract 1451543 Copolymers of acrylonitrile and pentadiene, isoprene or cyclopentadiene MONTEDISON SpA 19 Feb 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 7584/74 Heading C3P A copolymer of acrylonitrile and pentadiene- 1,3, isoprene or cyclopentadiene having an alternating structure is made by polymerizing the monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of a redox system as a catalyst. The acrylonitrile/isoprene copolymer is crystalline under X- ray examination, has 1,4-linking of the isoprene units, at least 90% of trans internal double bonds and an identity period of 7À23 Š. The acrylonitrile/pentadiene-1,3 copolymer has 1,4-linking of the pentadiene units and at least 90% of trans internal double bonds. The copolymers contain negligible Diels-Alder type by-products. In the examples the respective monomers were copolymerized in water in the presence of an ammonium salt ofnonylphenoxypolyethylenoxyethanol sulphate, an alkyl naphthalene sulphonate/formaldehyde, sodium sulphate, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid ferrous sulphate, sodium pyrophosphate, cumene hydroperoxide, tert. mercaptans, sodium sulphoxylate/formaldehyde, NaSO 2 CH 2 OH, and/or ferric nitrate. Piperylene was used as one of the monomers, consisting of a mixture of trans- and cis-pentadiene-1,3 and cyclopentene.
