titleOfInvention Cationic dyestuffs
abstract 1450827 Heterocyclic azamethine dyes BAYER AG 17 Oct 1974 [18 Oct 1973 20 Nov 1973] 45015/74 Heading C4P Heterocyclic azamethine dyes have the formula wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclyl, or alkylene bonded to A or to a ring fused to A; R 1 is H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, heterocyclyl or cyano; R 2 is H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; R 3 is alkyl; R 4 is H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclyl, or alkylene or arylene bonded to R 5 ; R 5 is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered aromatic ring; A completes a heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered ring; and An<SP>(-)</SP> is an anion, and wherein the radicals R, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and A optionally contain non-ionic substituents and/or carboxyl groups and the cyclic radicals are optionally fused to other rings which may be substituted by non-ionic substituents and/or carboxyl groups. The dyes are made by condensing a compound of the formula with a compound in an acid medium, or in an inert solvent in the presence of a condensation agent. A long list of anions An<SP>(-)</SP> is given including inorganic anions and those derived from organic carboxylic, sulphonic and phosphonic acids. The dyes are used for dyeing, printing and bulkdyeing of poly-acrylonitrile, polyvinylidene cyanide, polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, and polyamides, for dyeing and printing cellulose acetate, coir, jute, sisal, silk, tannin-treated cotton and paper, for making ball-pen pastes and rubber-stamp inks and in flexographic printing.
