titleOfInvention | Process for preparing salt stable latices |
abstract | 1450599 Salt stable latices NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 22 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 54228/73 Heading C3P A salt stable latex is prepared by (a) polymerizing about 10 parts by weight of a polymerizable system selected from (1) vinyl acetate alone or together with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (2) a mixture of styrene and an alkyl (meth)acrylate in aqueous dispersion containing a free radical polymerization initiator 1 to 5% by weight of a stabilizing polyelectrolyte which is preformed and is a homo- or co-polymer of an α sunsaturated monocarboxylic acid or a copolymer of a C 4 or C 5 ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride or is formed in situ from a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated C 3 -C 8 monocarboxylic acid, 0À05 to 5% by weight of a nonionic and/or anionic surfactant at a pH of 3À75 to 5À00 and at 40-80‹ C. and (b) adding to the product of (a) over 4 to 7 hours about 90 parts by weight of the same polymerizable system as used in step (a) maintaining the temperature at 40-80‹ C. and polymerizing to complete conversion. The polymerization system may contain N-methylol acrylamide, acrylamide, hydroxymethylated diacetone acrylamide, hydroxypropyl(ethyl)acrylate or methacrylate, glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate or N(isobutoxymethyl)acrylamide as crosslinking monomer. In examples vinylacetate is polymerized alone or together with one or more of ethylene, butylacrylate, ethylacrylate, or N-methylolacrylamide or stryene is polymerized with butyl acrylate and/or N- methylolacrylamide, the inititiator is potassium persulphate, the surfactant is one or more of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol and dioctylester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid and the polyelectrolyte is formed in situ from acrylic or methacrylic acid or is polyacrylic acid or a copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether. |
