titleOfInvention Paint compositions
abstract 1449451 Photocurable paint compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [9 Oct 1972] 46408/72 Headings C3R and C3P A paint composition comprises a pigment, at least one polymer capable of undergoing crosslinking in the presence of oxygen by an autoxidative polymerization process and a photosensitizer capable of absorbing incident actinic radiation having the structure wherein the groups A are the same and are benzenoid aromatic groups optionally substituted or heterocyclic groups possessing benzenoid characteristics. Suitable benzenoid aromatic groups include phenyl and naphthyl and their substituted derivatives containing for example halogen, alkyl or alkoxy substituents. Preferred photosensitizers are benzil, anisil, 1-naphthil, 2-naphthil, thenil and furil. The preferred pigment is titanium dioxide. Suitable polymers are unsaturated oil-modified alkyd resins alone or in admixture with another polymer, e.g. a polyamide, a polyurethane or vinyl polymer. Other polymers include polyurethane oils, polybutadienes and allyl-ether/ unsaturated polyesters. The composition may include a metallic drier, e.g. cobalt naphthenate. In Examples. 1 and 4 white gloss paints are prepared from rutile titanium dioxide, white spirit, a long oil length soya bean oil alkyd containing units derived from fatty acids, phthalic anhydride and pentaerythritol, and any one of the following photosensitizers: benzil, furil, anisil, 1-naphthil and thenil. In Examples 2, 3, 5 and 6 white gloss paints are prepared from rutile titanium dioxide, white spirit, benzil and either (a) a medium oil length linseed oil alkyd; or (b) a vinyl toluenated linseed dehydrated castor oil alkyd; or (c) a short oil length linseed alkyd or dehydrated castor oil alkyd, each of the alkyds (a)-(c) containing units derived from fatty acids, phthalic anhydride and glycerol; or (d) polybutadiene of M.Wt. 1500 mainly containing the cis 1 : 4 isomer. The paints are spread on glass and dried in diffuse sunlight.
