titleOfInvention Water purification apparatus
abstract 1448844 Domestic water filtration apparatus DYNEK CORP 28 Aug 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 40490/73 Heading B1D [Also in Division Cl] A portable domestic water filtration apparatus comprises a container defining an unfilteredwater compartment 10 mounted next to a pump compartment 12, whereby unfiltered water is led through an opening 20 in the base of compartment 10 into the inlet of a pump 18 mounted within compartment 12 and then is fed (by tube 22 and fitting 24) from the pump outlet into a filter device 14 mounted within the compartment 10, from which filtered water leaves the container by means of a nozzle 16 integral with the filter device. The apparatus suitably provides an integral mounting 40 for a beaker 38 for collection of filtered water. The filter device may comprise a particulate filter material 72 (Fig. 3) for purifying the water held in a one-piece casing 64 by means of two porous filter discs 68, 70. Such a filter device forms the subject matter of UK Specification 1448845. The casing 64 and its integral outlet nozzle 16 may be formed of plastics material and the filter discs 68, 70 are suitably formed of polyethylene. The lower disc 68 is of relatively coarse filtering action, e.g. it contains apertures of c.a. 35 microns, whilst the upper disc 70 is of relatively fine filtering action, e.g. it contains apertures of c.a. 10 microns. The particulate material may be active charcoal, part of which may be coated with metallic silver or a silver salt, or an ion-exchange resin or a mixture of the two. The lower filter disc 68 has an aperture size chosen such that, in combination with a non-positive action pump, e.g. a centrifugal pump, it will stop the filtration upon its becoming clogged and thus may be chosen to occur at the same time as the particulate filter material becomes depleted. The casing may be clear plastics and a dye indicator may be used to indicate when ion exchange material, if present, becomes depleted.
