abstract 1448003 4-Benzylideneamino-1,2,4 triazolin- 5-ones SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 28 Nov 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 55147/73 Heading C2C Novel 4 - benzylideneamino - 1,2,4 - triazolin- 5-ones of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is H, OH or alkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is H or alkyl; X is H, halogen, ClO 3 or Y p Z where Y is O, S, -SO- or -SO 2 -; Z is alkyl which may be substituted by one or more halogens; p= 0 or 1 and n= 1 to 5 are prepared by the reaction of a compound of Formula III or an acid salt thereof with a compound of Formula IV The reaction may be carried out in an aqueous alcoholic medium at, e.g. 15‹ to 35‹ C. The compounds are useful in herbicidal compositions which may also contain a carrier and/or surfaceactive agent. The preparation of intermediates 3-(trifluoromethoxy)benzimidazolide by reacting N,N<SP>1</SP>- carboxyldiimidazole with 3-(trifluoromethoxy)- benzoic acid and 3-(trifluoromethoxy)benzaldehyde by reducing 3-(trifluoromethoxy) benzimidazolide with lithium aluminium hydride, is described.
