abstract | 1447276 Zircon-based stain KEELING & WALKER Ltd 13 Dec 1974 [17 Sept 1973 20 Nov 1973 16 Jan 1974] 44039/73 53732/73 and 01962/74 Heading C1M A zircon-based stain is produced by calcining comminuted plasma-dissociated zircon sand together with a colour determining agent and a mineralizer. The zircon sand may be plasma dissociated, using a plasma arc operating at a D.C. energy input of 0À4-2 kWhr./lb. or an A.C. energy input of 0À4-4 kWhr./lb., to form a product at least partially dissociated into SiO 2 and ZrO 2 (preferably 50-98 wt. per cent fully dissociated and 2-35 wt. per cent partially dissociated). The dissociated zircon sand preferably has an average specific gravity of 3À5- 4À0. The dissociated zircon sand may be comminuted before mixing with the other ingredients, or the mixture itself may be comminuted. The comminution may be by wet or dry milling. The zircon sand is preferably milled in the presence of an additive which reacts with the SiO 2 in the dissociated zircon, e.g. caustic soda; caustic potash; hydrofluoric acid; sodium, potassium or ammonium bifluoride; sodium silicate; ammonium fluoride or alkali metal fluoride in the presence of hydrofluoric acid. The colour determining agent may be iron sulphate; iron oxide; praseodymium oxide, oxalate or carbonate; vanadium pentoxide; ammonium metavanadate; sodium ammonium vanadate; or such a vanadium compound together with a phosphate (e.g. trisodium phosphate, sodium monofluorophosphate, trixylyl phosphate, sodium polyphosphate or mixtures thereof). The mineralizer preferably contains red lead and/or lead bisilicate. The dissociated zircon is preferably comminuted to size 150- 350 mesh (British Standard) for use in making zirconium vanadium blue stain, or to size less than 350 mesh for zirconium praseodymium yellow stain. In examples the calcination is at 650-1000‹ C. |
