abstract 1447138 Flocked rubber sheets YALECO INDUSTRIES INC 26 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 33044/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A material is formed from a flexible non- porous sheet of natural or synthetic rubber having uniformly distributed throughout its body and over at least one surface thereof, natural or synthetic flock fibres, the total amount of fibres being from 0.5 to 10% by wt. of the material. Preferably the material is formed by blending the rubber and flock fibres, calendering the blend to form the sheet, and distributing the flock fibres over at least one surface of the sheet which is at an elevated temperature to adhere the fibres. In a preferred process, the blend 11 is is fed between the nips of rollers 12 to form two plies 13, 14 which are laminated by roll 15 to form the sheet 16. Rolls 17 control the temperature of the sheet before it is uniformly coated with flock fibres supplied to respective bins 19, 22 enclosing rotating rolls 18, 21 having brushes. Scrapers 23 remove excess fibres which may be recycled to the bins 19, 22. The calendering rolls 12 and temperature control rolls 17 may in addition stretch or otherwise change the dimensions of the sheet. Also the flock fibre coating stations may use an electrostatic device. Once the sheet is coated it may be passed through an oven to cure the rubber, or may be bulk cured. Suitable natural rubbers are listed and examples of synthetic rubbers are olefin, butyl, chloroprene, neoprene, isoprene and nitrile rubbers, S.B.R., polybutadiene, diene modified ethylene-propylene copolymer, and acrylate rubber. Mixtures of rubbers may be used. The rubber may contain conventional curing agents and fillers such as carbon black, clay, TiO 2 or SiO 2 . The fibres may be natural, e.g. cotton, wool or silk, or synthetic, e.g. nylon, rayon, polyester, cellulose acetate, polyacrylic, or modacrylic, polyolefinic, or a combination of any of the above.
