titleOfInvention Pyroelectric camera tube systems
abstract 1445405 Cathode-ray tube circuits DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 July 1974 [23 July 1973] 35040/73 Heading H4T [Also in Division H1] A pyroelectric camera tube system includes pyroelectric target 13 which has been poled, cathode 3 producing a scanning electron beam, output signal electrode 15, and an impedance 19 and voltage source 21 for transferring to the surface of the target between scans at a given point a sufficient charge to quench any excess charge produced on the target by the beam. The time for leakage to target 13 must also be long enough for storage and this is quantitatively detailed including specific RC values. The target resistivity may be controlled by doping, e.g. K, Bi and U doping of PZT and its derivatives. Lead germanate, lead germanate silicate and lithium sulphate of singly crystal or polycrystalline ceramic form are alternatives for operation with a direct voltage source 21. TGS and its derivatives, and lithium tantalate may be used if the voltage is time varying. A sawtooth waveform of 2 to 50 v./sec. rate of rise and 0À05 to 0À5 Hz is exemplified. Target 13 may be 10-100 Ám, electrode 15 may be Ni/Cr alloy and a few hundred Š thick, infra-red window 16 may be arsenic trisulphide or Ge and alignment of the ferroelectric domains by application of a 10 to 30 kV/cm. field may be before or after tube assembly. The signal from amplifier 25 is recorded or displayed (e.g. c.r.t.). Resistor 19 (1M#) is # ten times the amplifier 25 input impedance. If target 13 is of a material which does not strongly absorb infra-red at a desired wavelength, a composite structure including a further layer of infra-red absorber such as an organic polymer may be included. Electrode 15 and window 16 may be replaced by a single member which is transparent in the infra-red and electrically conducting.
