titleOfInvention | Isotopically enriched helium - 4 |
abstract | 1444176 Isotopically enriched helium L GARWIN 9 Oct 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 46995/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] Helium suitable for use as a nuclear reactor coolant is isotopically enriched in helium-4 wherein helium-3 content is below 0À16 p.p.m. preferably below 0À01 p.p.m. In an embodiment natural gas or air is fed to a helium extraction unit 12 wherein a portion of the helium content of the gases is removed as crude helium 13 containing small amounts of nitrogen and neon. The crude helium is passed through purification unit 15 of a conventional type and the natural source helium is then passed to a liquefaction unit 18 wherein the temperature is reduced to 4‹ to 5‹ K. and the pressure reduced to about one atmosphere. The liquefied helium, which contains less than one p.p.m. impurities, is then passed to the helium-3 removal unit 21. The unit 21 may be in the form of a column containing within it a plurality of contacting trays, liquid helium being fed into the top of the column. Liquid flowing downwardly is met by an upward flowing countercurrent stream of vapour generated by introducing a controlled amount of heat into a liquid helium pool at the bottom of the column. The rising vapour preferentially removes helium-3 from the downflowing liquid and the helium which is isotropically enriched in helium-4 is removed from the bottom of the column. In another embodiment the removal unit 21 is adapted for use on a batch basis wherein the liquefied natural helium is charged to the bottom of the unit 21 which is in the form of a still containing packing. The helium is refluxed, the vapour being generated being enriched in the helium-3. The removal unit 21 operates at a temperature of between 3‹ and 5À2‹ K., preferably 3À324‹ K. and 5À0‹ K. and a pressure of between 185 and 1700 mm., preferably 300 to 1500 mm. |
