abstract 1443822 Radiation polymerization; preparation of polymerizable materials CIBA-GEIGY AG 30 Jan 1974 [6 March 1973] 10796/73 Headings C3B C3P and C3R [Also in Division G2] Radiation - polymerizable compositions useful for preparing printing plates and printed circuits, and for coating metals, comprises a polymerizable material having at least three 3- sorboyloxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl groups attached to ether oxygen atoms. A sensitizer, e.g. Michler's ketone or benzoin methyl ether, may be present but is not essential. The polymerizable material may be one obtained either (A) by reacting sorbic acid with a polyglycidyl compound, e.g. (i) a polyglycidyl ether of a phenol-formaldehyde or cresol-formaldehyde resin, which may be advanced by reaction with a dicarboxylic acid or dihydric phenol, (ii) the tetraglycidyl ether of 1,1,2,2-tetra-(p-hydroxyphenyl)ethane, (iii) glycerol triglycidyl ether, or (iv) an epoxide resin containing glycidyl groups attached to both phenolic and alcoholic hydroxyl groups (see Example 18), or (B) by reacting glycidyl sorbate with a polyhydroxy compound, e.g. a phenol-formaldehyde resin (see Example 7). Where the polymerizable material contains residual epoxy groups, a cross-linking agent for these may be included, e.g. dicyandiamide (see Example 10). A free radical inhibitor is preferably also included, e.g. hydroquinone. In use the compositions are deposited from solution on to a substrate, e.g. a copper-clad laminate or aluminium, dried, and exposed to actinic radiation, e.g. from a mercury vapour lamp, imagewise if desired.
