abstract 1443738 Penicillin and cephalosporin salts ASTRA LAKEMEDEL AB 10 Sept 1973 [19 Feb 1973] 42391/73 Heading C2C The invention relates to a quaternary ammonium salt of 6-aminopenicillanic acid, 7- aminocephalosporanic acid, a penicillin or a cephalosporin wherein the ammonium ion has the general formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is a straight or branched alkyl group containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group and wherein R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP>, which are the same or different, each is straight or branched alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, provided that R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each an alkyl group with 3-6 carbon atoms when R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group. The ammonium ion is preferably the tetra-n-butyl ammonium ion. The ammonium salts of the invention have antibacterial properties and may be administered in a suitable dosage form with an appropriate pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The ammonium salts may be reacted with an appropriate ester-forming derivative to esterify the carboxy group and thus prepare the ester of a 6-amino penicillanic acid, 7- amino, cephalosporanic acid, a penicillin or a cephalosporin.
