titleOfInvention Thermosetting acrylic powders
abstract 1441814 Telechelic or semi-telechelic polymers; thermosetting polymer compositions UCB 11 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 33431/73 Headings C3B C3P and C3R Telechelic or semi-telechelic polymers have average composition of the formula where V is a hydrogen atom or Z, X is a radical originating from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying a polymerizable group and at least one other of the groups -OH, (R and R<SP>1</SP> which may be the same or different being hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl radicals), COOH or anhydride or an epoxy group, Y is a radical originating from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying only a group, 2 is a hydrocarbon radical carrying at least one -OH, -COOH or -NH 2 group, x is 0 or a number from 1-10, y is the required number of molecules of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer Y to ensure that the molecular weight of the polymer chain is from 2000-8000 and has a glass transition temperature of from 40‹ to 80‹C., the x radicals X and the y radical Y being statistically distributed along the polymer chain according to polymerization kinetics. Monomer X is preferably derived from anallyl alcohol, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid and anhydride, fumaric acid and anhydride, itaconic acid and anhydride, acrylaminoglycolic acid, hydroxy-C 2 -C 4 alkyl acrylate, hydroxy-C 2 -C 4 alkyl methacrylate, glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, C 1 -C 8 -alkyl monomaleate, C 1 -C 8 - alkyl monofumarate, N-methylolacrylamide, N - methylolmethacrylamide, N - C 1 -C 4 - alkoxy - methylacrylamide, N - C 1 -C 4 - alkoxymethyl - methacrylamide, diacetone acrylemide and diacetone methacrylamide. Monomer Y is preferably derived from a C 1 -C 8 alkyl acrylate, a C 1 -C 8 -alkyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, styrene, α-methylstyrene or a vinyl ether. The group(s) Z may be derived from a mercaptan transfer agent (ZH), e.g. thioglycolic acid, thiolactic acid, 3-mercaptopropionic acid, thiomalic acid, #-mercaptoethanol, 1-thioglycerol, cysteamine, or a lower alkyl ester of cysteine, or from a radical polymerization initiator (Z-Z), e.g. 4,4<SP>1</SP>-azo-bis- (4 - cyanopentanoic) acid and 3,3<SP>1</SP> - bis - azo- (3-cyanobutanol). The product may be used as the basis of a thermosetting acrylic powder, the other ingredients of which include cross-linking agents, pigment, filler, catalyst and other conventional additives.
