titleOfInvention Underwater breathing apparatus
abstract 1441368 Mouthpiece etc for underwater breathing apparatus FARALLON INDUSTRIES INC 3 May 1974 [2 Oct 1973] 19609/74 Heading A5T A retainer for use with a mouthpiece 11 for underwater breathing apparatus comprises a pair of retaining members 15 projecting from the mouthpiece and each with a rubber central body portion 16 extending to a flanged free-end portion 17 and surrounded by a thermoplastic blank sleeve (18) Fig. 2 (not shown) the sleeves extending to a pliabe lip portion 13 of mouthpiece 11 which is retained between the lips and the mouth of a user. The retaining members are received between the upper and lower teeth and by gripping the members with the teeth after the temperature of the members is raised, the sleeves then being in a plastic state, an impression of the users bite is obtained upon cooling. The thermoplastic material is ethylene vinyl acetate. The mouthpiece also includes a gas communication passageway 12 which opens into Up 13 through 'breathing hole 14. The thidkness of the central body portions 16 is chosen to ensure that the spacing between the users teeth, when closed onto bodies 16 is sufficient to permit breathing. In an alternative embodiment, the retaining members 15 are eliminated and the thermoplastic blank structures, either solid or including rubber cores, are affixed by moulding or bonding to the lip portion 13. In a third embodiment, lip 13 and retaining members 15 are integrally moulded as one piece of thermoplastic material which is bonded etc. to breathing tube 12. A method of obtaining an impression of the users bite comprises the steps af beating the blanks of thermoplastic material surrounding the retaining members to render the blanks plastic, the user then biting onto the blanks while they are still plastic, and allowing the impressed blanks to cool so that the retainer carries an impression of the bite.
