titleOfInvention Process for separating methacrolein
abstract 1440402 Methacrolein NIPPON ZEON CO Ltd 4 Jan 1974 [6 Jan 1973] 00422/74 Heading C2C A process for separating methacrolein from a gaseous mixture containing methacrolein comprises: (1) absorbing the methacrolein in the gaseous mixture with methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, iso-propyl alcohol or normalpropyl alcohol, and (2) subjecting the resulting methacrolein-alcohol absorption solution to extractive distillation with water in an extractive distillation zone, wherein said solution is introduced into the middle portion of said zone and the water is caused to flow down from the upper portion of said zone so that the concentration of water in the liquid phase in the absorbing section of said zone is controlled to a concentration in the range from 50 to 90 mole per cent, thereby to recover the methacrolein as the top distillate of said zone and the alcohol with water as the bottom liquid of said zone. The recovered methacrolein/water azeotrope may be separated and part of the methacrolein returned to the column as reflux and the water returned as solvent as may water separated from the bottoms by distillation. The alcohol thus separated may be recycled to stage (1), after dehydration if required. The gaseous mixture containing methacrolein may be derived from the oxidation of isobutylene or may be gas containing unreacted methacrolein from the oxidation of methaorolein to methacrylic acid.
