titleOfInvention | Catalyst for conversion of nitrogen oxides and process for converting nitrogen oxides |
abstract | 1439783 Gas separation HITACHI Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 44008/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases are reduced to nitrogen by reaction with a reducing gas at 200‹ C. or higher in contact with a catalyst comprising a porous ceramic carrier on which is deposited 0À1-10% wt. copper oxide, 0À1-20% wt. lanthanum oxide and 0À01-12% wt. zirconium oxide, the percentages being based on the weight of carrier. The exhaust gases may originate as exhaust gases from I.C. engines or flue gases from power station or other boilers, heating, sintering, incinerating or smelting furnaces or chemical industries. The reducing gas may be hydrogen, carbon monoxide or ammonia. When ammonia is used, it may be advantageous to add an oxide of sulphur to the gas stream, if one is not already present therein, or to activate the catalyst by forming an adsorbed layer of sulphur oxides thereon. The carrier bodies are suitably in the form of open ended tubes or rings or an aggregate thereof in order to provide a small pressure drop and diffusion resistance to the reactants at the boundary layer of the catalyst bodies. The examples describe the treatment of I.C. engine exhaust gases; gas mixtures containing nitrogen oxides, oxygen, water vapour, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and ammonia and either further containing sulphur dioxide or the catalyst being pretreated with sulphur dioxide and ammonia; and flue gases from oil-fired power station boilers containing nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and trioxide, oxygen, water vapour, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, to which ammonia is added as the reducing gas. |
