titleOfInvention | Thin film reaction process and reactor therefor |
abstract | 1439235 Reactions in thin films ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 30 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972 13 Aug 1973] 40979/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] In a sulphonation, sulphation or chlorination process in which a thin film of an organic liquid is reacted with a gas, the liquid is deposited from outlets 136, 138 on to the inner facing surfaces of rotating spinning disc 112 so that it forms a thin film thereon which continually moves towards the periphery, gas is discharged on to the films from openings 146 and product is removed at the periphery at outlet 154, the pressure in the disc being maintained below A.P., e.g. by gas removal pump attached at 44. The product is separated into gas and liquid at 38. Cooling fluid flows through chambers 124, 126. The disc may taper towards its periphery in cross-section. The process is preferably the reaction of sulphur trioxide with alkylated aromatic compounds with C 8-22 alkyl groups, e.g. dodecyl benzene, to form alkyl aromatic sulphonic acids, or sulphur trioxide with lauryl, myristyl and cetyl alcohol, C 8-20 α- olefins, benzene, anthracene, toluene and ethylbenzene. The process may also be the chlorination of cyclopentadiene or benzene. |
