titleOfInvention Combustible compositions and method of use
abstract 1438944 Combustible artificial resin compositions BROBAT-KAYFORD Ltd 1 June 1973 [5 June 1972 17 Nov 1972] 26089/72 Heading C3R [Also in Division C5] A combustible composition comprises carbonaceous particles substantially uniformly bonded by a carbamide or formaldehyde resin that was cured at below 60‹ C. A liquid hydrocarbon fuel (e.g. kerosene) may be absorbed in the particles and/or emulsified in the resin. The carbonaceous particles may be coal dust, creosote residues, charcoal, coking plant debris, wood charcoal plant fines, soot, and coal briquetting plant fines. Powdered hard coking pitches may also be included. The resin may be produced by use of an acidic or basic catalyst or by use of RF or radio-active radiation. Resins produced by use of a catalyst include melamine - formaldehyde, dicyandiamideformaldehyde, urea - formaldehyde, furfuryl alcohol - formaldehyde, furfuryl alcohol - ureaformaldehyde, phenolic formaldehyde, and resorcinol - formaldehyde resins. Surface active agents, e.g. aryl sulphonates, alkenyl sulphonates, dodecyl benzene sulphonic acids may be present in the composition. The composition may also include oxidizing agents, e.g. K, Na or ammonium nitrate, copper salts, zinc salts and tin salts, emulsion stabilizers, e.g. pclysaccharides or cellulose derivatives and additional particulate material, e.g. polythylene glycol, polyethylene granules, sawdust, fatty alcohols, fatty acid salts, paraffin wax granules and granulated firelighter. The details of the mixing (for instance including the use of the curable material as a foam) and moulding steps to produce the composition are described.
