titleOfInvention Method for the preparation of alkylhydroxybenzenes dihydroxybenze nes and alkyldihydroxybenzenes
abstract 1436369 Substituted hydroxybenzenes KOPPERS CO Inc 28 Nov 1973 [21 Feb 1973] 55293/73 Heading C2C Alkylhydroxybenzenes, dihydroxybenzenes and alkyldihydroxybenzene are obtained by: (A) heating alkylbenzenes, phenols or alkylphenols in the presence of H 2 SO 4 at an elevated temperature, e.g. at 130‹ to 200‹ C., to form an isomeric mixture of alkylbenzene sulphonic acids, phenol sulphonic acids or alkylphenol sulphonic acids; (B) selectively desulphonating said alkylbenzene sulphonic acids, phenol sulphonic acids or alkyl phenol sulphonic acids; (C) caustically fusing the undesulphonated alkylbenzene sulphonic acids, phenol sulphonic acids or alkylphenol sulphonic acids to obtain the salts of the alkylhydroxybenzenes, dihydroxybenzenes or alkyldihydroxybenzenes; and (D) optionally acidifying the salts to liberate the desired alkylhydroxybenzenes, dihydroxybenzene or alkyldihydroxybenzenes. The selective desulphonation may be effected by steam distillation. Specified starting materials are phenol, cresol, toluene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, m,p-xylene and m,p-diethylbenzene.
