titleOfInvention Method of preventing the formation of by-products during the sulphonation or sulphation of organic compounds
abstract 1433725 Prevention of the formation of byproducts during the sulphonation or sulphation of organic compounds MARNI SA 15 March 1974 [20 March 1973] 11672/74 Heading C2C A method of preventing the formation of byproducts during the sulphonation or sulphation of aromatic compounds comprises feeding an excess of the compound to be sulphonated to at least one reaction vessel to which is also fed sulphur trioxide in an inert carrier gas as a gaseous sulphonating reagent, separating the sulphonated product from the non-sulphonated compound and recycling the non-sulphonated compound containing the reaction by-products dissolved therein to the reaction vessel(s) to provide the required excess of the compound to be sulphonated.
