abstract 1432963 Amorphous zeolite precursor TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 June 1973 [14 July 1972] 30399/73 Heading C1A An amorphous precursor for a crystalline aluminosilicate is prepared by forming an aqueous mixture of sodium aluminium silicate in which the composition in terms of mole ratios is Na 2 O/SiO 2 from 0À8 to 3À0; H 2 O/Na 2 O from 35 to 200 and SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 from 1-3 to 2À5, removing the water from the mixture by contacting with a water-soluble solvent and drying the resultant amorphous material. The precursor thus obtained may be converted into a crystalline zeolite by mixing with water, ageing at <100‹ F. for 8 to 170 hours and subjecting to a hydrothermal treatment at a temperature of 150‹ to 325‹ F. for-at least 3 hours to give a type 4A zeolite. Type 3A, 5A, X and Y zeolite may be made by mixing with -an aqueous solution of a potassium salt, a calcium salt, or specified proportions of silicate ion, followed by the ageing and hydrothermal treatment. Specified solvents are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, dimethyl sulphoxide or dimethyl formamide. Suitably the starting mixture can be formed by reacting an aqueous solution of sodium silicate with one or more of CO 2 , SO 2 , H 2 S, sodium bicarbonate, bisulphite or hydrosulphide and adding sodium aluminate or by reacting an aqueous solution of sodium aluminate and sodium hydroxide with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate.
