titleOfInvention Asymmetric polymer membranes of reduced elastic modulus
abstract 1432866 Asymmetric membranes GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 Nov 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 51112/73 Heading B5B A membrane having a porosity increasing from adjacent one major surface of the membrane to the second major surface comprises as the polymeric material polyarylene oxide, polycarbonate, polyvinyl acetate polyalkyl methacrylate, polysulphone and polymers of monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbons, the membrane containing a 1-25% of grafted elastomeric material as particles of size range 0À1-10 microns distributed therein, the elastomeric material being in a state insoluble in the polymer material and the grafting material being soluble in the polymer material. The porosity is due to the presence of branch like network of pores extending through a mass of polymer crystals interconnected in a rigid network. The membrane is prepared as in Specification 1,295,585 with the exception that the grafted elastomeric material is added to the casting solution. The liquid coating solution is applied via the head 11 to the moving belt 12 as a layer 5-25 mils. thick. The belt transports the layer 23 horizontally for a period equal to the desolvation time then transports the layer a leaching bath 24, the roller 14 being two spaced rollers that engage the edges only of the belt not covered with the coating. The wet solidified layer at some point is separated from the belt via the roller 26 and the unsupported swollen layer is conducted over rollers 27 and 28 through a long path so that the solvent content of the solidified layer is reduced to a low level and the internal stresses have been relaxed. The layer 23 is removed via roller 29 to dryers (not shown) and the belt 12 is reconditioned by transport via rollers 17 and 18 through a washing in a tank 31 and a dryer (e.g. belt drying rollers 32, 33) before return to the coating drum 22. The belt is any flexible surface and the washing liquid in tank 31 is water.
