abstract 1432665 Polymer/phyllosilicate interaction products GERDEC GROUPEMENT D'. ETUDES RECHERCHES ET DE DEVELOPPEMENT EMC-CFE 10 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 32872/73 Heading C3P A phyllosilicate-reinforced polymer of high impact strength, and rigidity, which comprises an inter-reaction product of a polymer and a phyllosilicate such as asbestos, is prepared by: (a) polymerizing a monomer in the presence of (i) a phyllosilicate and an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer having an alcohol or epoxy group and an ester or amide linkage; (ii) a reaction product of a phyllosilicate and said comonomer; (iii) a phyllosilicate and a copolymer of said monomer and comonomer, or in the presence of (iv) a reaction product of a phyllosilicate and said copolymer, or (b) incorporating a reaction product of a phyllosilicate and such a copolymer, with a polymer of said monomer obtained in the absence of the phyllosilicate or by (c) incorporating a phyllosilicate with such a copolymer. The phyllosilicate is preferably asbestos (e.g. chrysotile) which has been pretreated with an acid, in order to remove 5-30 wt. per cent of the metallic atoms of the octahedral layer. Examples of suitable comonomers are hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylates, glycidyl(meth)acrylates and hydroxyalkyl- or glycidyl substituted acrylic amides. In the examples: (1) and (9) styrene and hydroxyethyl methacrylate are copolymerized in the presence of chrysotile fibres; (2) 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate is pre-reacted with chrysotile and copolymerized with styrene; (3) as in (1) with different proportions; (4) as (1) but using 2- hydroxypropyl methacrylate; (5)-(8) and (11) copolymers of styrene with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxy propyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate are compounded directly with chrysotile fibres such that reaction occurs; (10) styrene and glycidyl methacrylate are copolymerized in the presence of chrysotile fibres; (12) polystyrene, styrene/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer and chrysotile fibres are directly mixed; and (13) as (12) but replacing the polystyrene by polyphenylene ether/polystyrene commercial mixture.
