abstract 1431758 Matrix displays FERRANTI Ltd 18 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 28923/72 Heading G5C [Also in Division H1] Display apparatus comprises gas filled cold cathode D.C. devices each with electrodes 4, 3 in contact with the gas, an impedance 5 connected to electrode 4 and another electrode 10 capacitatively coupled by dielectric 26 to the gas space; a first array of conductors 23 connecting rows of impedances; and parallel conductor arrays connecting columns of electrodes 3 and 10 respectively. As shown the electrodes 3, 10 are formed by portions of conductors of their arrays. The gas spaces are formed by apertures 21 in plate 20 sealed by top and bottom plates 26, 24. The dielectric of plates 26 is reduced in thickness adjacent each cell. The cells are filled with Ne and tritium. In operation a sustain potential V m is applied to electrodes 3. Initially pulses exceeding the write potential are applied to selected electrodes 3 and 4. With electrodes 10 earthed, discharges are initiated and the capacitors are charged to V m on the reduced thickness insulation 8. The discharges are maintained by the potential on electrodes 3 and can be erased by pulses on electrodes 4 and restarted by pulses on electrodes 10 which add to the wall storage at 8. By applying alternately on and off pulses and by varying the time between them large variation in contrast can be obtained. The wall charge can be removed by gradually increasing the potential on electrodes 10 and applying pulses to electrodes 3.
