titleOfInvention Coumarin derivatives
abstract 1431448 Coumarin derivatives PRODUITS CHIMIQUES UGINE KUHLMANN 18 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18650/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of Formula I where R is C 1 -C 5 alkyl optionally substituted by a non-ionic non-chromophoric group, one of R 1 and R 2 is a triazole radical and the other is hydrogen, halogen or C 1 -C 3 alkyl, the triazole is optionally substituted by one or two groups selected from C 1 -C 3 alkyl or benzene radicals optionally substituted by up to three substituents. These compounds may be obtained (a) by reacting a diazonium salt II with a coumarin III (the process exemplified) (b) by reacting an orthohydroxybenzaldehyde IV with an acid V or a functional derivative (e.g. alkali metal salt, nitrile, methyl or ethyl ester) thereof (c) by alkylating with for example an alkyl sulphate a compound of Formula I in which R is H. The preparations of diazo compounds II from the corresponding amines are described. Also described is the preparation of I, in which R 1 =CH 3 , R 2 =4,5 - dimethyl - 1,2,3 - triazol- 2-yl and R 3 =Cl, by treatment of the corresponding N 1 oxide with Zn/HCl, the N 1 oxide itself being obtained by reaction of the N 1 oxide of the corresponding compound II with 7-methoxycoumarin. The compounds are used as optical brighteners for polyester fibres.
