titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of vinyl acetic acid and optionally of ypsilon-butyrolactone
abstract 1430415 Vinylacetic acid and γ-butyrolactone HOECHST AG 12 April 1973 [12 April 1972 27 Jan 1973] 17599/73 Heading C2C Vinylacetic acid, and optionally γ-butyrolactone, is made by reacting allyl alcohol, and/or and ester and/or an ether thereof, with carbon monoxide at 0À5-500 atm. gauge in the presence of a catalyst comprising one or more transition metals selected from Groups VI, VII and VIII of the Periodic Table and/or one or more compounds of these metals, an ester or ether being used only in the presence of water, and for the simultaneous production of γ-butyrolactone and vinylacetic acid an allyl ester is used as starting material in the presence of water and carbon monoxide in excess. Preferred or exemplified catalysts are hydrated chlorides and iodides of Co, Ni, Rh, Ir and Pd; methyl iodide may be added, and a support for the catalyst may be used. The production of vinyl acetate is exemplified by the use of allyl alcohol, allyl acetate and diallyl ether, and co-production with the lactone by the use of the allyl esters of acetic, propionic, isobutyric, caproic, benzoic and toluic acids; pressures of 120-150 atm. were used.
