abstract | 1430387 Applying sheet material to plane surfaces IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 27748/72 Heading B6G [Also in Divisions B5 C3 and G5] A panel having a surface pattern is produced by placing on to a substrate, a superstrate lamina shaped to define the desired pattern, the substrate and superstrate comprising cellular thermoplastic materials which are mutually discernible, pressing the surface of the superstrate and at least that portion of the substrate adjacent the superstrate, using a die having a face at a temperature above the softening point of both the superstrate and substrate thermoplastic materials to thereby collapse the cellular structure of the superstrate and substrate where contacted by the die and to form an integral non-cellular surface layer containing the pattern as an integral part thereof, cooling the die face to harden the non-cellular surface layer and removing the die. Dyes, pigments or fillers, e.g. glass fibres, may be incorporated into one of the laminĀµ or contrasting dyes, pigments or fillers incorporated in the different laminĀµ. The superstrate may comprise a plurality of separate pieces of material or may be a perforated layer. The die may be smooth to produce a glazed surface on the panel or may be embossed, and may be flat to curved. The substrate and superstrate may be made from waterextended polymers formed from inverted emulsions having a continuous phase comprising an oil having a polymerizable constituent, e.g. styrene, methyl-, ethyl- or butyl-methacrylate or acrylate, or vinyl acetate, and an aqueous phase. The superstrate preferably has a thickness of 3-6 mm. The panels may be used in the production of road signs. |
