titleOfInvention | Copolymers and hydrogels of unsaturated heterocyclic compounds |
abstract | 1430299 Water-swellable copolymers UNION OPTICS CORP 2 July 1973 31513/73 Heading C3P A water-insoluble but water-swellable copolymer which has been made from a monomer mixture comprising: (A) a heterocyclic N- vinyl monomer containing a carbonyl functionality adjacent to the nitrogen in the heterocyclic ring and/or a hterocyclic N-alkyl monomer containing a carbonyl functionality adjacent to the nitrogen in the heterocyclic ring, the heterocyclic monomers being water-soluble and capable of homopolymerizing to a water-soluble material, and (B) a glycidyl methacrylate and/or glycidyl acrylate and/or glycidyl crotonate, the monomer mixture containing from 40 to 75% by weight of the heterocyclic monomer A, and from 25 to 60% by weight of the glycidyl ester B based upon the combined weight of the monomer A and ester B in the monomer mixture may be prepared by polymerizing the monomer mixture in bulk in the presence of a free radical catalyst at a temperature of from ambient temperature to 150‹ C. A shape retaining hydrogel, e.g. in the form of a contact lens may be prepared by swelling the copolymer with 10 to 90% by weight of an aqueous liquid. In the examples N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and glycidyl methacrylate are copolymerized in the presence of tert-butyl peroctoate in circular moulds. The polymer is placed on a contact lens lathe, ground and polished and then contacted with physiological saline solution. |
