abstract 1426386 2 - (6 - Methoxy - 2 - naphthyl) propionic acid SYNTEX CORP 2 May 1973 [11 May 1972] 20734/73 Heading C2C dl - 2 - (6 - Methoxy - 2 - naphthyl) - propionic acid is prepared by treating 6-methoxy-2 (1- propenyl)naphthalene with thallium trinitrate in the presence of a strong acid and a solvent system comprising water and an inert water-miscible ether solvent to give 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propanol and oxidizing this to give the desired acid. A dl-mixture thus obtained may be optically resolved if desired. Pharmaceutical compositions having antiinflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activity, comprise 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) propionic acid, when prepared by the above method, together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
